Plans and Measurements

The heart of our Land Rover camper has to be the simplicity and comfort of the bed design.

Like something from amazing spaces, we spent hours upon hours scribbling ideas and nothing seemed to be 'the perfect' design'. We picked the brains of friends and family and it was pretty evident everyone's ideas about camping differed from extreme luxury to complete ho-bo. As frustrating as it seemed, suddenly ideas began to mesh and as if from nowhere we had our 'perfect design'. The best thing about it is undoubtedly how easy it is to manipulate depending on what you want to do. Driving mode can be totally folded up, Day mode is a sofa set-up or for more people an L-shape and come nighttime, the bed can be for single person down one side or a full size double. And to top it all off, its comfortable!

A common question we are asked is 'how tall are you?' This could be a problem for the Peter Crouchs of the world. The bed length is 190cm (6ft 2) however I think for comfort 5ft.11-6ft might be the maximum.

On the matter of height, it was also important for us that we could sit up comfortably on the sofa during the day and in the bed at night. The head room above the bed is 93cm however towards the front of the discovery the ceiling dips, lowering it to 84cm.

The bed design also has the benefit of huge storage draws underneath which we use one for food and cooking and one for tools.

These are the plans we worked on. Please note, the measurements are approximate and I can not vouch that they are exact!

We used 12mm Plywood. Make sure you varnish it afterwards for weather protection.

Admittedly, its very helpful when your dad is a builder! Credit to my mum and dad for all their help.

We are so pleased with the design, it works really well for the type of camping and trips we go on. If you give it a go or do something different, we would love to hear about it and see what you did.
